Charging Into the Future

With the release of the Cadillac LYRIQ, Cadillac marked an intent to “define the future of luxury transportation”.  Rory Harvey, vice president, Global Cadillac said his plan to do that over the next decade involved the release of a series of electric vehicles, the first of which is the LYRIQ.  A true luxury SUV built on the exciting and highly flexible Ultium Platform from GM, the LYRIQ is a true revelation in the world of electric vehicles and a leader among all electric SUVs.

Powertrain of the Cadillac LYRIQ

The rear wheel drive version comes with a single motor on the rear axle that produces 340hp.  The all wheel drive version sports a dual motor set up with 500 available horsepower more than the Model Y in its staunchest Performance trim.  It is capable of moving the large vehicle from 0 to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds.  Both versions are built on the modular Ultium battery architecture, in this case a 12 module version with a capacity of 102KwH.  The battery can be charged at 19.2Kw at home and can use DC fast chargers on the road.  The RWD and AWD versions have an EPA estimated range of over 300 miles and 

can add another 76 miles of range in 10 minutes at a DC fast charger or 195 miles in 30 minutes.  Even at home the battery can fully charge in 5 hours using the 19.2Kw connection.

Tech Features

Choosing to focus on usable tech in the cockpit rather than gimmicky video games, the Lyric comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, a feat Tesla has yet to manage.  Not content to rest on their laurels, Cadillac went a step further and added Google Built-In to its capabilities.  Built-In allows apps to be displayed on the touchscreen display. That allows you to use google maps on the infotainment system without even connecting your phone.  It also includes Google Assistant, which can use voice commands to navigate the infotainment features or even control some vehicle functions.  The touchscreen is a giant 33 inch curved glass advanced LED display that can also be controlled by a click wheel in the center console. Housing both the instrument cluster and the infotainment system, the massive screen is a far sight larger than the screens in any of Tesla’s models, which get no bigger than 18.5 inches in the Cybertruck.   

Luxury and Ride Comfort

Inside the cabin is a haven of comfort and luxury.  From the luxury styling on the comfortable seating to the upscale accent work on the door panel and trim, the interior design embraces the things that have made Cadillac famous while providing a stark contrast to the barebones styling of some of its popular competitors like the Model Y and Model X.  The smooth ride and comfort will be familiar to previous Cadillac owners, and the noise canceling technology reduces road noise in the vehicle.  Cadillac embraced some new design elements as well, things like laser etched patterns through wood over metal.  The entire cockpit and passenger area is packed with features that exude luxury and distinguish the LYRIQ as a cut above its competition.

LYRIQ delivers where the Model X falls short

The Cadillac LYRIQ is priced around $30,000 cheaper than the model X.  Despite the added cost, the Model X falls way short in terms of quality.  This is especially evident inside the cabin where the fit and finish fail to meet the expectations of a luxury price tag.  The ride quality of the two vehicles are also considerably different with the smoother suspension and more comfortable seating of the Cadillac providing a much more refined overall feel.  While Model X drivers are using a third party work around just to get google maps on their screens the LYRIQ provides this through superior connectivity options.  It is not only tech and comfort that separate them however, The LYRIQ is slightly shorter, but incorporates a longer wheelbase that gives extra leg room to its passenger in the first and second row when compared to the X.  It also has 22% more ground clearance than the Model X.  The model X also underwhelmed with a few design decisions such as the steering wheel and rear butterfly door design that gave the LYRIQ a serious advantage when loading gear or passengers while the vehicle is parked next to other vehicles or in a garage.
